Whether you are relocating your business or making big changes to your building, don’t let fire detection equipment slip your mind. Redesigning or moving to new premises can be exciting, but remember safety is vital. Whether it comes to installing a system or maybe even upgrading what you already have, an effective fire alarm can provide safety to you and your staff.

The Rules and Regulations

No matter the nature of your business or workplace, fire detection technology is a requirement by law. Whether the employer, owner or landlord of the building you will have to make sure that adequate fire alarms are placed around the building and are constantly undergoing tests to make sure they are working effectively.

Your responsibilities in this position not only state that you must install and maintain efficient fire alarm systems, but you will also have to provide correct fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and ensure that they are up to scratch for the occasion should a fire spark.

All staff members need to be aware of any fire risks that could occur in your workplace and also a safe and efficient exit plan. These tasks are imperative especially when the world is becoming so dependent on technology there are slight risks all around us and we need to be made aware. It’s very easy to put fire safety on the back burner but regular fire drills will ensure all your staff are best prepared for a fire. These rules and regulations are given by the UK government and are intended for all businesses to adhere to. Failure to live up to responsibilities can result in a fine and even prison sentences.

All fire alarms need to be installed to BS5839 below is an excerpt from the British Standard description covering this:

“BS 5839-1:2002+A2:2008 sets the standard for fire detection and alarm systems in non-residential buildings. This code of practice gives essential guidance on effective design, installation and maintenance. And these are the latest recommendations on protecting your organization through fire detection and prevention. BS 5839-1:2002+A2:2008 applies to all fire alarm systems, from small manual networks to complex automated systems.”

When the initial survey of the building takes place, this will address the team can go about the location and the project as efficiently as possible. They will always make sure that you are happy with the proposal and the process before going ahead.

After the installation, the team will also test it to ensure that it is working properly and to the level the company and customer expect. There will also be a maintenance agreement put in place, to ensure that the fire alarm is up to scratch and working throughout the years. Security systems are an investment and when it comes to fires, they can strike anywhere. Fire alarms need to have a constant presence in the workplace as you may not have an incident for months and maybe years. Forgetting to regularly test and maintain a system can cause it to stop working leading to possible serious ramifications.
